How Fast Can Bathurst Greyhounds Run?
Greyhounds are the fastest dogs in the world and have a top speed of 45 miles per hour. The highest verified speed of a greyhound was 41.8 miles per hour. This was recorded in Wyong, Australia, in 1994. Due to the long legs, flexible spine, fast-twitch muscles, large heart and double suspension gait, the dogs can run extremely fast. Bathurst greyhounds are a type of sighthound bred to track and hunt prey in the open. Over time, they became well-adapted to running. Like Cheetah, a greyhound runs in a "double suspension gallop" where each hind leg follows the foreleg, and all four feet leave the ground. For each stride, the dog's body expands and contracts.
The
greyhound has an enormous heart size, accounting for 1.18% to 1.73% of the body
mass. On the other hand, a human heart weighs only 0.77% of the body's total
weight. The heart of a Bathurst greyhound circulates the entire
blood volume four to five times during a 30-second race. Due to the high blood
volume and packed cell volume, the muscles get the oxygen needed to perform at
peak efficiency.
A Comparison of Greyhounds Vs. Other Fast Animals
Greyhounds
are known as the fastest dogs because they can reach the highest instantaneous
speed. For other dog breeds, the fastest speed is 40 miles per hour, including
deerhounds, vizslas, salukis, and others. These dogs are sprinters and
medium-distance runners. Dogs are much faster than humans. A greyhound can even
outrun a horse in a sprint because it accelerates quickly. While Bathurst greyhounds are fast, they can't still accelerate as soon
as a cheetah. The top speed of a cheetah can range from 65-67 miles per hour.
However, a cheetah is only a sprinter, but a greyhound can overtake a cheetah
in a long race.
It's
not easy to determine the fastest greyhound because greyhound tracks vary in
length and configuration too. In addition, greyhounds can run through the
courses or tracks. Therefore, comparing the performance in different situations
is not fair. Thus, the fastest greyhound is determined based on its performance
relative to other dogs.
